Many believe him to be the greatest experimentalist who ever lived. He was born in Newington, Surrey, near London. He received no more than primary education and apprenticed a bookbinder at the age of 14. He was appointed assistant of Humphrey Davy's laboratory at age 21. Davy was the greatest influence on Faraday's thinking.
